Kyrene Middle School Reviews

I would not let my daughter attend KMS this year after what I learned from last year. We moved here 6 yrs ago to be in a great school district, loved Waggoner, hated KMS...what a disappointment! The school has gone down in so many areas. Test scores, which many parents tried to bring to the schools attention in various meetings, but very little if any changes were make. The constant discipline the teachers are having to deal with, taking away from the other student's learning. Their form of punishment. The bullying that is constant and students are afraid of retaliation. My daughter said there were fights almost every day out by the buses, behind the buildings, everywhere. She did not feel safe and I did not feel like school should be a scary place for her. We are so happy we enrolled her in a charter school this year.

KMS is a great school that gives lots of opportunities to some students who may not otherwise have had the chance to experience all middle school should be. Are there challenges? Yes, but my experience has been that the challenges are delt with in a timely professional manner. My youngest daughter attended all 3 years and participated in student council, drama club, a media class, chorus, Spanish and a musical production. She has made life-long friends and was always happy about going to school. All of the teachers we had the pleasure of meeting were AWESOME! Ms. Pam Adams is the best! She is always willing to help and always friendly and should be back at the front desk! Change is not easy but all children deserve a chance at a quality education and thanks to KMS for providing one!

Ineffective and incompetent. The teachers and staff used to spend their time teaching. So much time is wasted every day correcting behaviors, breaking up fights and handing out detentions that bear no consequences. Obviously detention is an ineffective form of discipline as the students spend the time napping, texting and listening to smuggled music at their desks. During class the teachers waste so much time explaining concepts to kids who don't care they can't challenge the ones who do want to learn. Maybe if we flunked more kids and rewarded the ones who did great our scores would be higher.

The test scores and accountablity for KMS have decreased over the last few years. I have been very disappointed in this schol, because of the some of the teacher quality, unsafe campus, and lack of challenging work. Their are a few great teachers, but unfortunately the bad outweighs those few teachers. I would not recommend this school to anyone.

this has gone from a very outstanding school, to extremely 'ghetto', in a short period of time. over two thirds of my child's science classmates were flunking as of third quarter. the teachers seem very caring and dedicated, but the administration appears lost and adrift in a sea of apathy. many students are now bused in for credit dollars and provide nothing but discipline problems, which are a major distraction to the few students left, who are trying to learn. this school has been a major disappointment.

I have been disappointed with this school. There are some great teachers, but also some teachers that should change professions! This year the school failed their requirements for math. They had no plan until the last 4 months of school for improvement. My quiet child was ignored when needed help, was bullied and wasn't helped until I called the police, and in the 3 years my child has attended the school, I have yet to get a call back from the numerous times I left messages for the principal.

This school is great! It has a prep program for kids who are ahead. And all of the classes are great! Also the staff are great and try to make sure that every child in their class is doing their best. Also there are good clubs and helpful Exploratory class teachers. If you choose a school choose this one! I haven't seen 1 bully and don't plan to because this year in almost over!

Next year will be my last at Kyrene Middle School. Kyrene Middle School has a program called Caring Majority which is supposedly stopping bulling at Kyrene Middle School. It is useless. Don't put your kid in KMS.

Great school all-around. The KMS TV program allows 'techie' students to learn and improve their computer skills at the same time.

KMS is a god send! I love this school and all of there staff. This school is one of the best that I looked at for my children. They proved me so right! Kids at KMS should fell very lucky they have the teachers and staff that will go above and beyond for all of them that attend this school.

Too many students in class and poor communication between administration and parent.

My child is in his second year at KMS and is doing extremely well, with great teachers, and honors level work. We travel 50 miles a day to attend KMS. The principal is very visible, available, committed and no nonsense. The rules for safety and discipline seem very clear cut. I feel safe having my child attend KMS. The neighborhood is quiet, the setting pretty. The changes this year to electives seem wise to us (we are an artist family)and we think that it is enough to have our child have orchestra and Spanish every other day because there is so much in this type of study that needs to be done at home before a next session is needed.

I am finished with the Kyrene District. There is total disregard for the needs of kids, with test-score hysteria and poor fiscal planning driving the cutting of arts and Spanish language instruction. Kids need balance and a sense of community and citizenship, and they need to feel successful and joyful about school. This school strips what is joyful out, substituting worksheets ad nauseum for good teaching and lifelong learning. If you think of your child as a learning machine responding well to Pavlovian punishment instead of shared enthusiasm, send your kids here. Otherwise, look elsewhere.

Academic programs OK. Teachers AWESOME. New scheduling and lack of exploratories paired with 68 minute classes is very disconcerting. Behavior is not the best - disruptions make it difficult for teachers. Principal is close-minded, not a lot of communicating with parents, PTO is small group that doesn't attempt to communicate with community of parents. Sadly, even with the great teachers, not a good choice for open enrollment.

'Administrative Nightmare' sums is up. Very inflexible, and now cutting programs to make way for testing, testing, testing.

Administration is rigid; doesn't think of all students when making decisions, scheduling for next year in electives is vague due to district changes; electives of Family & Consumer Science, Art, Drama, and Technology are in a wheel - students sign up for these but only get two of them and they do not get to pick which two. Spanish has been moved to an elective. PE is only every other day. Total of two semester electives for year is too low. Teachers are awesome! Not sure how they can be effective with 68 minute classes and so many cuts.

My daughter attended KMS and she loved it. I did not like the drug problems and the fights but, they weren't all that frequent. The only sport that I ever really heard about frequently was cheer, but overall it is a good school. The teachers are great and very helpful.

I think the school has a lot to be desired. I'm upset about many things the administration is doing to segregate our students.

I was first introduced to Kyrene Middle School two years ago and have been suprised at every corner. The Principle cares about her students and desires that teachers also care equally. It has been a pleasure to be involved with Kyrene Middle School, it is a model school for learning, arts and personal developement for students.

KMS is great! I love the interaction between the teachers and my student. However, with the recent changes to next year's currculumn (2005-2006), with 68 minute classes and fewer choices for courses such as band,Foreign language, P.E., arts and technology, the whole dynamic of the educational structure at KMS will change. I know that this is being done to help better prepare the children for AIMS testing, but there needs to be an equitable balance - which has not been met with the current school booard's decision.

Kyrene Middle School staff is the best in the country! They are so willing and nice. Have great extracurricular activities for the children and great academics!

KMS is a wonderful, inclusive school with dynamic and knowledgable teachers and staff, supportive administrators, and a wide array of classes and extracurricular activities. I recommend this school to anyone.

This school is very diverse. Also it has a great technology program, dedicated teachers, and outstanding performing arts program for a public school. Tjhe campus is clean and large. This school has great sport teams. I don't see why anyone wouldn't love KMS. Go Scorpions!

this school is excellent! I would reccomend any parent to send their child to kyrene middle school
