Arizona State University employees have announced they will form a union, becoming the second group of public university employees to do so this year. Community members announced Thursday that members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Arizona chapter have begun to establish their union chapter on the university's campus.

Arizona State University (ASU) began in 1885 as Tempe Normal School and was founded by the Thirteenth Territorial Legislature to provide education in mechanical arts and agriculture. Arizona State University was founded as a "Territorial Normal School" in Tempes on March 12, 1884, when the 13th Arizona Territory Legislature passed a law to create a Normal School for Teacher Training in Arizona territory. Originally an institution for the training of teachers, it was later, in 1901, founded by a thirteenth territorial legislature as an independent educational institution.

Arizona State University's West Campus has created a learning community that combines liberal arts education with 21st-century preparation. One of the many locations of the university is one of five distinctive campuses in the Phoenix area that form a federation of unique colleges and schools. Four (ASU) ranks 42nd in the US and 56th in Arizona, according to the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAS), the second largest university of its kind in North America.
