TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities say two Tempe police officers have been shot and hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries and the suspected gunman has died.
Police say the shooting occurred about 3 p.m. Monday in a neighborhood near Kiwanis Park as the officers were serving a protection order for a woman whose boyfriend had allegedly assaulted her.
They say the boyfriend fired shots at both female officers, who were forced to retreat and return fire.
Police believe the shooter was struck by at least one bullet.
He was later found dead in the home, but police say it's unclear how he died.
Police say both officers were shot in the upper extremities, but were protected by bullet-proof vests.
One officer was shot three times.
Police didn't immediately identify the injured officers or the suspect.
